Suffragette Jewellery E-mail

Suffragette jewellery was primarily made with green, white and violet (or purple) stones, signifying "Give Women Votes". But the stones have further meanings: green stood for Hope, white for Purity and violet for Dignity. They are not only pretty pieces of jewellery, but were also an expression of a desire to overturn the established idea's of society.

Women began wearing this jewellery when the movement became banned, they wanted to be able to identify others who had similar political aspirations. Many of the pieces are very well made as most of the campaign leaders were from wealthy families, but quite often the maids would also want to show there solidarity therefore cheaper pieces were made using coloured paste stones.
